Dallas breaks much-awaited heat record, with mixed emotions
DALLAS (Reuters) - Record watchers in Dallas had something to cheer about on Tuesday, or lament, depending on their point of view after this summer officially logged more triple-digit days in north Texas than any other on record. "We made it," said Jesse Moore, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. "We tied the record on Monday and beat it on Tuesday."
Hosepipe and balloon: think of it as a volcano
LONDON (Reuters) - There will be an unexpected sight high in the skies over the British county of Norfolk next month: a huge balloon attached to the ground by a giant hosepipe. It isn't obvious, but it is the first small step in an experiment which aims to re-create the cooling effect of erupting volcanoes on the earth's atmosphere.
Exxon Louisiana refinery cited for safety breaches
(Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp's refinery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana exposed workers to possible fires and explosions among other safety violations, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration said on Tuesday. "It is fortunate that in this case that no one was injured," the federal worker-safety agency's Baton Rouge area director, Dorinda Folse, said in a statement.
