Wild card races heat up as Cardinals, Rays win

(Reuters) - The St. Louis Cardinals kept the heat on Atlanta in the race for the National League's wild card berth on Saturday with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs that came courtesy of a walk and a wild pitch in the ninth inning. The Cardinals narrowed the gap on Atlanta to two games after the Braves lost 4-1 to Washington, while in the American League wild card race, Tampa Bay closed to 1 games on Boston and the Los Angeles Angels maintained their slim hopes with a 4-2 win over Oakland. The Angles trail Boston by 2 games.

Haas wins Tour Championship and playoff honors

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Ice-cool Bill Haas held his nerve to beat fellow American Hunter Mahan in a thrilling playoff for the season-ending Tour Championship on Sunday and also claim FedExCup honors with its $10 million bonus. Haas knocked in a four-foot par putt at the third extra hole, the par-three last, to seal victory with Mahan having bogeyed after hitting his tee shot into a greenside bunker and splashing out 15 feet beyond the cup.

NBA postpones training camps, cancels 43 preseason games

(Reuters) - The National Basketball Association (NBA) said on Friday it had postponed training camps and canceled the first week of preseason games as it struggles to reach a new collective bargaining agreement with players. The NBA, in the midst of its first work stoppage in 13 years, said training camps scheduled to open October 3 have been postponed indefinitely and 43 preseason games from October 9-15 have been canceled.
